Overview

This is an instant football game from Evoplay, 2020. Five penalty kicks, and after every goal you choose whether to take the money or take another kick. Every kick is a straight 50/50, so the only skill the game tests is knowing when to stop. This is the first of the Penalty line. Street moved the same five kicks onto a Brazilian street in 2023. Super Cup kept the stadium and polished the loop. Cup Mania stretched the ladder and added a buy. Super Spin is a later 5×3 slot that only borrows the name.

Look and sound

The game is set in a stadium, with you and the penalty taker in position. The graphics are crisp and the animation creates the feeling of an electric atmosphere with a pumping electrowave soundtrack with rock riffs that keeps an addictive intensity going. The crowd adds to the atmosphere and thumping kick sound effects work really well here.

How a win works

The premise is simple, but surprisingly addictive. You take a penalty. Either it goes in, or the keeper saves it. Score and your stake is multiplied. Miss and the round is over and the stake is gone. You have five zones to aim for around the net or a random button that picks for you. This isn’t a game of skill, so the choice technically doesn’t matter, but for some reason you still find yourself picking certain spots, even though it’s just a 50/50 coin flip.

The collect decision

Then the game stops and asks you the only question it ever asks: take the money, or take another kick. Carry on and the multiplier doubles. The multiplier is simply the number your stake is multiplied by, and here it starts near two and doubles at every step. Miss the next kick and you lose the goal streak that you built.

Chaining the goals

What’s great about this game is how quickly the rounds pass, meaning you can kick away to your heart’s content. Although each kick is 50/50, you can’t help but think that you can outsmart the keeper and try to chain together five goals, although I was never able to get more than four a few times. However, unlike crash games, when you get to a good chain number, say three or four, that’s locked in, and you don’t need to worry about timing your collect. There’s something satisfying about sitting at four goals in a row, knowing that you’re one press away from a large money bag collection.

Every rung is exactly double the one below it, and every rung is exactly 0.96 of a clean doubling: 1.92 is 0.96 × 2, and 30.72 is 0.96 × 32. Therefore each kick has to be a straight 50/50, as for the return to land on 96.00%, a goal that pays 1.92x must go in half the time. Although it always feels like it, the keeper is not getting better as you climb. It only feels that way, because you have more sitting on the table! To reassure you, there’s a HASH section on screen, with a value printed on screen that you can check afterwards to confirm the round was not tampered with, which is what “provably fair” means.

Verdict

Evoplay scores a worldie, 8/10

The minutes and hours can pass by with this one, especially if you’re a football lover. It’s a really well-executed game that does everything it sets out to do perfectly well, and keeps you coming back for one more try. Although the max win of 30.72x doesn’t seem like a lot, there’s a good chance you will actually see it, unlike the max wins of other games (1 in 32).

Other games to check out would be Penalty Shoot-Out: Street, which is the Brazilian favela-themed sequel, and one that actually has goalkeeper difficulty levels with the multiplier climbing as they get better.
